Effects of the ash were felt worldwide. From the vent at Novarupta, the towering column of ash, called a plinian eruption column, jetted skyward with little interruption for 60 hours.

Concurrently, it distributed ash flows that filled the Valley of Ten Thousand Smokes and fed a high umbrella cloud more than 1,000 miles (1,600 km) wide that shrouded most of southern Alaska and the Yukon Territory.
