Your Trip to Brooks Falls

We are so glad you are coming. This packet has everything you need to feel ready before you arrive, from getting to King Salmon to what to pack and what your days will look like. Read it once now, and keep it handy as your trip gets closer. Anything at all that comes up, just reply and we will take care of it.

Getting Here

You will book your own commercial flights into King Salmon (AKN), usually through Anchorage. We recommend booking these early, as seats are limited in summer. Once we have your flight details, we will confirm everything on our end.

From the moment you land in King Salmon, the logistics are on us. All ground transportation is included, so we will coordinate getting you to the B&B and everywhere you need to go during your stay. You do not need a rental car.

A quick note on flights: weather in this part of Alaska can shift plans, so we suggest building in a little buffer rather than booking the tightest possible connections home.

A Day at Brooks Falls

Your round-trip transportation to Brooks Falls is included, primarily by floatplane, with the water taxi as a weather backup. The flight is a highlight in itself, with the country opening up beneath you on the way in. All park fees are included as well.

MorningBreakfast each morning at the B&B, then we get you out to Brooks for the day's viewing.
At BrooksTime at the falls and viewing platforms, watching the bears fish the salmon run, at the pace the day allows.
EveningBack to the B&B, then the evening shuttle over to dinner. Time to rest up for the next day.
Brooks Falls is an active bear habitat. The park rangers give a short safety orientation on arrival, and we will go over everything with you too. Following their guidance keeps it safe and easy for everyone.

Meals

Breakfast each morning is included at the B&B. For the rest:

  • Lunch is available at Brooks Lodge while you are out for the day (about $25).
  • Dinner each evening, we shuttle you over to the Sockeye Saloon, usually on the way back from Brooks (about $25).
  • A grocery store is about five minutes from the B&B if you would like to grab snacks or anything for the room.

What to Pack

Alaska weather changes quickly, so the key is layers and staying dry. Here is what we recommend:

  • Waterproof rain jacket and pants
  • Warm layers (fleece or wool)
  • Waterproof, broken-in hiking boots
  • Hat and light gloves
  • Binoculars
  • Camera with a zoom lens
  • Sunscreen and bug spray
  • A small daypack
  • Refillable water bottle
  • Quick-dry pants (no jeans)
You do not need waders or fishing gear unless you have booked a fishing day, in which case we will cover those details separately.

Good to Know

  • Connectivity is limited. Expect spotty cell service and wifi. It is part of the magic, but let people back home know you may be off the grid.
  • Weather drives the schedule. If a flight shifts to the water taxi or a time changes, it is routine up here, and we manage all of it for you.
  • Cash and cards. Bring a card for lunch and dinner, and a little cash is handy for small purchases.
  • Optional add-ons like a Lake Clark day can be arranged separately if you are interested. Just ask.
