Your Stay
Katmai B&B is a small, hosted bed & breakfast on the Naknek River, and the basecamp for Brooks Falls. Your hosts live on site, and we handle the hard part of a Katmai trip: the flights, the trip out to the bears, getting you around town, the timing. You get the bears, handled. What follows is what your stay includes and, just as important, the two times that keep it running smoothly for everyone.
What a stay includes
Reaching Brooks Falls means stitching together flights, remote travel, lodging, and weather all at once. That part is ours. Here is what comes with your stay.
Round trip out to the bears, with a backup if we can't fly, so you are never down to one option.
We meet your flight, bring you into King Salmon and out to the boat or plane for the falls, and we handle the evening run to dinner too.
Katmai National Park fees are handled, so there is nothing to sort out on arrival.
Breakfast every morning, plus a coffee bar and snacks through the day.
Fast, free internet, useful out here when you are tracking flights and weather.
Your hosts live on-site, you reach us directly, and there are never more than six guests at a time.
The rhythm of your stay
Your days at Brooks Falls are unhurried. A day on the platforms runs about six to eight hours, timed around the trip out over the tundra and back. It is a full day with the bears, framed by two of the most beautiful flights in Alaska.
Your first and last days are travel days. You arrive in the afternoon, settle into the B&B, and ease into the trip, then fly out around midday at the end. So a three-night stay gives you two full days in the field, with time on either side to land, unwind, and catch your breath before the long journey home.
With those two days, you get to shape the trip. Many guests spend both at Brooks Falls, and when the viewing is as good as it often is, no one regrets it. Others give a day to the Valley of Ten Thousand Smokes or to fishing the Naknek. Each is a trip of its own, so it is worth thinking about what you most want to see. Tell us, and we will build your days around it.
Arrival & departure
Two times anchor every stay. They are the same for every guest, and they are firm. Build your Alaska Airlines flights around them and everything else falls into place.
Book the afternoon Alaska Airlines arrival into King Salmon (AKN), the later flight of the day, which lands around 5 PM. That is the flight our airport shuttle meets, and we bring you straight to the B&B to settle in. Please do not book a Sunday arrival.
Check out by 11 AM. Book the midday Alaska Airlines departure out of King Salmon, the earlier flight out; our shuttle leaves the B&B at 11 AM to connect with it, so your last morning is unhurried and you make your flight with room to spare.
Why these times are firm: it keeps the experience the same for every guest, and it gives us the window we need to reset the B&B for the next group. An earlier arrival or a later departure means no pickup for it and time spent waiting at the airport. No exceptions.
Who you're staying with
Your hosts run Katmai B&B themselves. Being small is the point: you will know your hosts, you can reach us directly, and there are never more than six guests at a time. We handle the flights, the trips out, and the timing so you can be fully present for the bears, and nothing makes us happier than sending guests home with the trip they came to Alaska for.
